Allison's Library - What's in a Name?

The names of all the characters have unique twists. For instance, the attorney Mason Street is a combination of Perry Mason and Della Street. (Viewers of old television shows will get this.)

Name Game #2 - from the cozy mystery When the Bough Breaks
Ida Parks – librarian and friend of El (Lana) Turner
Our mothers had brought Ida and me together. More specifically, the names our mothers gave us. Mine had hoped for a movie star; Ida’s mother dreamed she was fostering another dedicated activist. Both mothers had been disappointed. (WTBB 73)
Ida’s mother named her for activists Ida B. Wells and Rosa Parks.
Interesting - In 1884, Ida B. Wells was asked to give up her seat on the train. When she refused, several men dragged her out of the car.
Interesting – Rosa Parks also made quilts and loaned them to Michigan State University for an exhibit.

One more name reveal – Cassie (Cassandra) Troy (self-proclaimed historical society owner in Parkville) - In Greek mythology, Cassandra is given the gift of prophecy, but after angering the gods, is cursed so no one will believe those prophecies. Cassie has always believed in the goodness of Clark Hill (the town founder), but no one else does. Cassandra lived in the city of Troy.

Today’s addition is Alan Poe, the illustrious inspector in charge of the murder investigation and growing romantic interest of El Turner.
Many years ago, a student of mine gave me a Poe bobblehead doll which graced (or haunted) my desk until I retired. It continued to be a muse, inhabiting a nearby window with a small Buddha, given to me by a friend who visited China. Poe’s name finally made its way into my work (Poe’s police companions call him Eddie) and the bobblehead even made a cameo appearance in the book.
